Crucible (Carlton)
-
The meaning of the word crucible that I think
Miller had in mind when he was writing his play was number three a serve test
or trial. The text talks about how certain people were accused and blamed of
using or being possessed by witchcraft. So those people had to go to trial and
if they were proving guilty of using witchcraft they would be hanged and
killed. Abigail started blaming Tituba for the reason Betty wasn’t waking up because
she said that Tituba put some kind of spell on them while they were dancing in
the forest. She did this because people were starting to suspect that she was
the one doing it to Betty. Then Tituba started confessing that she was
possessed with witchcraft and that she saw Sarah Good and Goody Osburn with the
devil when she really didn’t. Then Abigail and Betty join in with Tituba naming
off people that they claim they saw with the devil. Now all those people who
were accused have to go on trial and prove that they not a witch or go along
with what the other three were doing and blame other people so they can say
their own life.
