What Did Miller Have In Mind With The Word Crucible? (Brianna)
When Miller used the word crucible in the title of his play
to mean a few different things. One meaning mean a container made of a
substance that can resist great heat, for melting, fusing metals. This could
mean that Abigail could resist the heat from the town accusing her of being a
witch. The second meaning is the hollow bottom of an ore furnace, where the
molten metal collects. This could compare to the girls being hollow not saying
anything about the conjuring they did in the woods and just letting the “molten
metal” {they towns hate towards the witches}. The third meaning is severe test
or trial, which could mean the test ad trials the town puts against the so,
called witches of Salem. The crucible also has one meaning in the bible for
example, when god was crucified because people thought he was not telling the
truth about not being the Lords son. When miller used the word crucible in the
tittle for a good reason and a good purpose to connect the tittle to the story.
Putting the word in the tittle has purpose because the girls blame everyone
else to be witches to not get in trouble, so the people that they accused will
hang.
