Personal Response: Setting (Clara)

Why does the author spend so much time describing the town?
The author spends time describing the town because many people that don’t know how Holcomb, KS looks like. Some people in this world don’t know what the town Holcomb is the author describes it so they can know some features of what it looks like. People also want to know what Holcomb looks like or what it is so the author described it and wrote stuff about Holcomb, the good stuff and the bad stuff. The author spends time describing Holcomb maybe because he really liked it there and how the people lived and how the things are different then any other town. Also the author spends time describing this place because Holcomb don’t look like a type of place for crimes and murder to occur this is the reason why he describes it a lot.
Describe Holcomb. In what ways is it an ordinary town?
Holcomb, KS has high wheat plains is the western part and there is a lonely area. The country side has blue skies and fresh desert-air. It is in the western area of Kansas and its basically in the middle of no where. The people are different here, many men wear narrow frontier trousers, stetsons, and high-heeled boots with pointed shoes. The land is flat and has beautiful views that are extensive and has horses, herds of cattle, and many white gain that grows high. Its building are divided between the Santa Fe train tracks. Holcomb doesn’t sound like a type of place for murder and crimes it sound like a peaceful place to live. It is mostly farming in that area and there is many farmers in Holcomb. Its not like every other town this is an ordinary town with its ways.
How is it different?
Holcomb is an ordinary place and it’s kind of different than other towns. The people are different they dress different and they talk differently with their accent and they live different. It’s a small town I think everyone there knows each other; Holcomb is like the rest of Kansas, dry. There are about 270 people living in Holcomb, many of them like the town a lot its ordinary life with work, hunting, watching television, attending school, meeting for clubs, and choir practice. Holcomb is only different because of its location and its people. In Holcomb the people are religious they have their own type of religion and it’s a small village so mostly all the people from the village live close and they know each other
