Suspense (Ricardo)
Instead of taking the direct approach of giving
every detail of the murder at the beginning of the story, the author, Capote
builds suspense in the book by not fully depicting the actual occurrences of
the murders while it was happening.
Capote also built suspense from the beginning of the novel by starting
the book with a casual scene even though, when the reader picks up the book
he/she is most likely to know someone is going to die. The author also drops hints and clues like
the rubber gloves Perry bought that give insight about what is to happen next,
and allowing the reader to try and make connections to the murder in order to
add suspense. Recreating all the
character’s perspectives lead the reader to suspect certain characters such as
Nancy’s boyfriend, Bobby Rupp. Although
when Bobby took the lie detector test and proved to tell the truth about not
killing the Clutters the reader was back at square one, only able to infer
while the suspense was building in part because the reader wants to know who
the real murderers are. Throughout the
story the author also develops the relationship of characters such as Perry and
Dick, and at a certain point the reader starts to notice Perry and Dick static
characters change to a more dynamic type, adding to the suspension.
