In Cold Blood - Suspense (Carlos)
How does Capote build suspense throughout the
story despite the fact that readers know the ultimate outcome from the
beginning of In Cold Blood? I say Capote kept building suspense through the
book when he tells the story from his point of view and from Dick and Perry’s
point of view. Even
though we know the outcome of the story, Capote builds suspense by showing the
path the killers take to achieving the murder. He
probably put in some events that probably never occurred in real life but still
made it exciting for readers. The quotes that he puts in the book is probably
another way that increases the suspense throughout the story. Capote wrote
about Dick and Perry’s past to get to know more about them and their
childhoods. Capote gives you pieces of the puzzle and you feel like you need to
keep reading more; you feel want to know to know how it all happened and can
read both the killers traveling and Holcomb’s view which is the investigation
and by the end of the story it should all fit together like a puzzle. I haven’t
even read the whole book but it’s an interesting story to me because of being
to read from two different points of views.

Capote keeps us interested in the book because he tell us
detail be detail. What’s going to happen with the Clutters family. He tells us
what was the environment that they were living in and how the family was like
if they had some kind of illness or were sick. Also he says how the life of
Dick and Perry were because Perry had a family and he went to bar and would
preform and get money out of that so he could gave his family food and keep
them in a good environment. Dick was alone he didn’t have no family but his
friends Perry and he would always give Perry a ride or pick him up when he was
out of the bars or where ever Perry would play. That makes the book interesting
because the read want to keep knowing more and more about the book. Also since
the book is about a murder its interesting because the reader would like to
know was did Parry and Dick kill the Clutter’s family. What was they reason for
them to kill the Clutter’s family, or if the Clutter’s family did something to
them so Dick and Perry could have done that to them. Also this is something
that happen in Kansas and I thought it was pretty interesting that someone would
take their time and talk to the killers and to the rest of the Clutter’s family
and ask why did Perry and Dick kill the Clutter’s family.

Suspense (Meiko)
I feel like Capote built suspense throughout the book by
making you guess what’s going to happen next. When you have the reader thinking
what’s next, it also gives them a better understanding of the book & makes
the book a little more interesting. In Cold Blood is a good book in my opinion
also because Truman Capote knew how to make the book with more suspense. He
still has me wondering what is going to happen next. We all know that the
Clutter’s were killed but we don’t exactly know all of the details in the story
yet. He builds suspense in the book by adding all types of clues, factual
information, & things that make you think or ask yourself questions. He
also did a good job with this book because it gives you the smallest things,
from detail to detail. Truman Capote put a lot of thought into this book
because I feel like that’s how you gain a lot of readers & viewers by
making the book more interesting. Truman Capote is a great author on so many
different levels. The reason being is because he can also break everything up
into bits & pieces to actually make us feel like we were there when it
happened & The Clutter’s got murdered.

Suspense (Karla)
Even you know the outcome of the of
the book in the beginning, Capote builds up suspense is by going giving parts
of what’s going to happen and makes it more interesting. He started telling the
story different from other books by telling the murders in the beginning
instead in the end. By putting the murder scene in the beginning, he slowly
develops the suspense and starts developing the facts of the murders and the
killers. This also makes you jump into conclusions about the murders and why
Perry and Dick killed them. When the murders happened we don’t know much details
so as you keep reading the suspense starts to build up and the pieces start to
come together. Capote tells the story in different point of views so you know
what’s happening in the investigation, the residents in Holcomb and the
killers. He also shows suspense by telling how the killers get away. In the
beginning we don’t know much of Perry and Dick so when you keep reading you
start knowing more about them and discover
their background and why they did it and learn about their feelings.
This makes you want to keep reading because you want to know more details and
how the murders happened. By reading the entire book you start knowing all the
details and come to a conclusion, which makes it more interesting.

Capote builds up suspense by using a method of only giving
little bites of the crime to the reader and he makes it sound more interesting
then what it is. Capote only gives us details of what’s going to happen at the
end of the book. At the end of each chapter the four members of the family ends
the chapter saying something that is related to death or as if they knew what
was going to happen to them. I think capote uses this method to keep the reader
reading the book to the end of the book. Because the reader is probably
thinking while reading that the murder is going to happen at the end of the
first chapter or the beginning of the second one. I also think that he does
this to keep the story interesting why, well because it wouldn’t of been the
same if he just say’s the murder in the first chapter it wouldn’t be a story
there but the way he does it, he explains everything and keeps on giving little
bites of what is going to happen. I like this method that he uses because it
makes the story more interesting, it wants to make me keep on reading the story
more and see what’s going to happen. The way he wrote the story makes you doubt
if the family is really going to be killed or if a member of the family is
going to survived.
